The AIDS WALK NYC 2018 KnowNOW Team took off to a great start. Our KnowNOW team came together in Central Park on a warm yet wet Sunday morning with thousands of people coming out to support a wonderful cause. This was the 33rd NYC AIDS Walk, every year since 1986 by Gay Men’s Health Crisis, also known as GMHC. This year the benefit was for GMHC as well as 40 other local HIV/AIDS organizations. The AIDS Walk NYC is the largest AIDS fundraising event in the world, with over $150 million raised.

Our team consisted of doctors, physician assistants, the KnowNOW Success Team as well s friends and family. Two mothers with strollers were part of the KnowNOW walkers. Our goal was to raise over $1500.
The total walk was via 72nd Street in Central Park up the East side walk to 110th St then to Riverside Drive – over 6 miles in total.

“It was a tiring walk but well worth it,” stated Claudia Cruz part of the KnowNOW team. It rained and then the sun came out on the thousands of New Yorkers who walked to help end AIDS. New York City has over 100,000 New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS, the city with the highest rate in all of the United States. 1 in 5 people infected with HIV/AIDS are not aware of it in NYC.

“It’s still in specific populations, such as young gay men of color, gay men of all ages, transgender women of color, and non-transgender women of color — that’s where we’re seeing the increases,” said Krishna Stone, the director of community relations for GMHC at the opening events.

The AIDS Walk 2018 raised around $3.2 million. It was great to be a part of this important event. Too many New Yorkers still acquire HIV/AIDS when they could have prevented it. Approximately 2500 -3,000 NY’ers still get infected yearly. These are preventable infections. At KnowNOW we want to help get people tested for HIV in a safe and private way. We also want to get people on PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) – one pill a day to prevent at-risk people form getting HIV.

Thanks to the KnowNOW Team for coming out today and helping participate in this wonderful event.
